Welcome to The Paint Box Gallery. Here you will find one of a kind works that Adele has created on commission or for gallery show. Some pieces use her own handmade papers as a layering effect or as cut out shapes or as a surface to write on. Others use photographic techniques like Lazertran or Poloroid transfer prints and some are simply detailed watercolors with colored lettering.

As Edward Johnston eloquently said: “Our task is to simply make good letters and to arrange them well.”

Life is Made

Life is made up of moments,
small pieces of glittering mica in
a long stretch of grey cement.
It would be wonderful if they

I started with the strong watercolor wash and then added actual silver leaf to symbolize the “mica” that Anna refers to in her quote. It is seemingly fluttering across the page and behind the calligraphy as well. I did the calligraphy in a rather ornate style to symbolize our busy lives. The calligraphy itself has been dimensionally mounted, and I added a light
gilt edge around it to separate it
from the background wash

Once again I created this
marbled affect in the paper as I made large sheets in a water vacuum box. I gently swirled the colored pulp and then dried the paper to achieve the background for this piece. Simple rubberstamped
dominos mounted on the paper add a touch of mystery to the quote. I chose a simple style of calligraphy in order not to compete with the artwork.


Special Furniture

Occasionally I am asked to decorate a
piece of unfinished furniture. It’s always
a challenge, as sometimes the piece
dictates the layout and the coloring.
For this trunk, the customer chose the
quote (the Ojibway Wisdom), and then
gave me the artistic freedom to complete
the rest. The quote follows the edge of the
lid top, and then I added stars on the
inside as well as the tree silhouettes all
around the outer sides.

Spirit Houses

For years I have been working with the concept of creating an environment for some of my favorite quotes. The idea of designing a “Spirit House” came to mind as I love to be able to nest shapes inside of shapes. You will find within this category an unusual grouping of homes, all of which in some way include books which of course contain words that mean much to me.

 

After Awhile

Goodbye
After a while you learn the subtle
difference between holding a hand
and chaining a soul, and you learn
that love doesn’t mean leaning and
doesn’t always mean security. And you

grace of a woman with the grief of a
child and you learn to build all your
roads on today because tomorrow’s
ground is so uncertain, for plans and

mid-flight. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much, so
you plant your own garden and decorate
your own soul instead of waiting for
someone to bring you flowers. And
you learn that you really can endure, you
really are strong, you really do have worth
and you learn and you learn, and with every goodbye you learn.

Behind the door of this Spirit House is a book that I created in the shape of a half moon. Inside are individually folded and colored pages that contain the words from a poignant poem about growing older and letting go.

A friend of mine gave me an emu egg a number of years ago. It sat on my shelf for a while until I summoned the courage to cut it open, and yes, it had already been blown out! Now that I had opened it successfully, the whole creative process began. I no longer felt intimidated to move forward. I chose the wonderful Sanskrit verse about a new day coming forth. The little heart shaped book fits perfectly inside a porcelain heart that I built wings on to and decorated with feathers that my sister collects from the National Zoo in Washington, DC.

In this Spirit House I enclosed a pear that I carved from papier-mâché and then made the book pages from actual pear pieces that I dried and then applied artwork and words to. The “pages” actually fold back up like an accordion and fit inside the pear so the book can go on its own shelf of the house.

One of my favorite songs, I have done it in a variety of ways, but this is one of my best. I was going through a bunch of old photos that I had stashed in my closet. I came across this one of me as a 10 year old; I remember how I felt with this first taste of independence, being allowed to row where I wanted all summer long. That was a summer full of fond memories. The small book contains a montage of the lake’s edge, and when it is folded up, it fits in the small birch bark holder in the house’s eaves.
