Time It Was
Time it was
and what a time it was…
a time of innocence, a time of confidences.
Long ago…
I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories:
They’re all that’s left you.

Cotton fibers dyed and molded into sheets of paper. I have taken individual dimensional paper molds and mounted photographic images made from Lazertran on to them. The photos are of my childhood at my summer lake house, reminding me of Paul Simon's song. |

Yesterday
Lost yesterday somewhere
Between sunrise
And sunset
YESTERDAY
Two golden hours,
Each set with sixty
Diamond minutes.
No reward is offered…
For they are gone forever.

I created a carved polymer mold for the word "yesterday" and couched (pressed under pressure) the cotton paper over the mold. Once it dried, I added my hand colored paper for decoration and then of course, my calligraphy was designed to drop into the back of the layered "yesterday." |

Mayflower
Pink “ small “
and punctual
– Aromatic “ low”
Covert in April
Bold little beauty
Candid in May
“Bedecked with thee
Dear to the moss “
Nature forswears
Known to the knoll
“Antiquity
Next to the robin"
In every human soul

Commissoned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society to present to a retiring board member, I designed the calligraphy to surround a grouping of mayflowers that I had water colored. Often I start with the poem or passage and then design the artwork around it, this time the delicate spring flowers dictated the layout and the calligraphy style. |

Stopping by the Woods
Whose woods are these I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I love the idea of paper layers, this worked perfectly with this Robert Frost poem. I hand cut the winter trees, mounted them dimensionally on top of the layered background hills. I chose a very simple uncial script which lends itself to the starkness of the winter scene

I Went to the Woods
I went to the Woods because I wished to
live deliberately
To front only the essentials facts of life
And see if I could not learn what it had
to teach
And not, when I came to die,
Discover that I had not lived.

One of my favorite quotes called for a design that I see out my living room window at my home…the Merrimack River sweeping down through the wooded hills of Franklin. The papers are gently layered to give the depth and feel of our valley.

Perhaps they are not the Stars
Perhaps they are not the stars but rather openings in heaven
Where the love of our lost ones pours
through and always shines
Down upon us to let us know that they are happy.

I designed this piece to be dimensionally layered. I started with a strong watercolor background and added the trees as the first layer. On top of them I added the calligraphy strips that I have dyed and then hand written the words in white gouache.

This piece is made from my own cotton based fibers and shredded blue jeans. I hand mixed the two together to get the wonderful marbled effect. The Thoreau quote I chose has the strength of wisdom to contrast the whimsy of the loose calligraphy and whimsical paper.
